On Saturday, April 27, 2024, thirteen parent leaders will join the ranks of over 250 alumni of the Greater Rochester Parent Leadership Institute (PLTI).  This group marks the 11th Cohort to complete the 21-week course that focuses on parent leadership and advocacy skills.

In addition, sixteen youth will graduate from the Children's Leadership Training Institute (CLTI), a parallel program in which the children of participating parent leaders focus on age-appropriate activities that include empowerment and improving the community.

Greater Rochester PLTI is a family civics initiative that equips parents with advocacy skills to influence their communities and broaden opportunities for their children. PLTI differentiates itself by embracing a cross-race, cross-class, and parent-informed, pro-social educational approach.  PLTI is a local initiative of the National Parent Leadership Institute (NPLI), an evidence-based program designed to increase parent involvement in community issues.

Center for Governmental Research CEO Erika Rosenberg is a PLTI board member and alumna.  She talks about the importance of the program, "I wouldn't be in my leadership position had I not grown in my ability to listen, appreciate and learn from diverse perspectives, and navigate complexity through my PLTI class experience. We all understand the impact PLTI has already had in changing the narrative about parents in our community, and we can see how much more it can do in the future, as we continue to graduate parent leaders prepared to step fully into their roles as civic change agents.”

Alumni of PLTI in the area have gone on to numerous elected positions, board memberships, and as leaders of nonprofit organizations.  As part of the curriculum, parent leaders create and implement a project to benefit the local community.  Past projects include the Gardiner Spray Park, reviving the Rochester Library bookmobile (to launch this summer), and numerous other community projects, programs, and events that have greatly enhanced the Greater Rochester community.
